The plan, doors and spells

From: Porter

Subject Going in

Mund is all for going ahead.

If Harp stays true to his over-cautious nature, Mund will suggest that the magickers launch all of their magick into the room before retiring. Mund can open and shut the door quickly allowing fireballs, magic missiles, and summoned critters to be cast into the room quickly.

From: Jason

Subject going in

Given the circumstances, Ragnar will voice cautious support for going ahead. If they leave two people in the doorway, the wolves or whatever will have to come to them. In that case, he will suggest that Harp (being the only person left with healing for the day) not be the one in the door. Perhaps Mund and Ran, or Mund and Ragnar (the only reason Ragnar is at all hesitant about putting himself in that position is that he would be the one to use the scrolls if things get messy.)

From: Karl

Subject going in

Salix is all for going ahead. He's getting tired of this unnatural place and wants to return to the woods as soon as possible.

From: Kevin

Subject going in

Harp waits to hear from Salix or Allistair on what they may know of these creatures. He will be reluctant to charge into a room with so many opponents. He will more likely want to draw them into the doorway or hallway where the group would only have to face 2 at a time. He is more than happy to hack at 2 of them while the other 6 howl and bay from behind, waiting their turn to die. Harp also has in the back of his mind that they could try to draw them up to the main room, where they could surprise and surround them by the doorway.

OOC: Mark, I will wait for the knowledge check for Allistair and Salix before we decide what to do.

From: Porter

Subject Going in

Perhaps if we have a couple of strong people manning the doors, we can draw out one at a time and close the door behind it.

Mund reiterates his idea of opening the door quickly, tossing in magick, and closing the door. If we do it with three people (one to open, a second one to do magick, holding his action until it's opened, and a third one (and possibly a fourth) to hold action until the spell is in there, then slam the door shut. Unless the critters in there are holding action at the door as well, they'll have zero chance to respond.

From: Kevin

Subject Going in

OOC: The problem is what magic (if any) will work on them and trying to get them in close proximity to each other.

I want to hear from our more learned friends before we put anything together.

While I know what they are, the characters do not. My personal initial thought is to lure them into the hallway with Ran and Harp up front (most HP and best A/C), with Mund and Ragnar right behind to switch off as needed. Salix, Kal and Allistair behind us up the hallway ready to use magic as needed. If we can peg these things down at A1, A2, B1 and B2, they will not be able to surround us.

From: Randy

Subject Going in

"We should fight them in the hallway. If we have Mund open the door and high tail it down the hall, we can set up with ranged weapons and maybe a fireball. We can keep the door to the main room open and retreat into there if we need to engage in melee combat. Given our current state, we need to take the advantage and whittle down their numbers before they can touch us."

From: Derek

Subject going in

Allistair doesn't really know what these creatures could be. Although, considering that in general each room has been more difficult that the last, he really doubts these are regular wolves. The smell of sulphur is suspicious too... but he can't place it.

"I wonder if we can open the door just enough for one of these creatures to come out and then close the door. Or perhaps just crack the door open enough so that it could stick it's head through but not go all the way through. Mund could stand to the side with an axe and decapitate the thing."

From: Kevin

Subject Going in

IC: Allistair, the problem with that is that the door open in. Mund would have to pull it closed, and if one of those things is in the way, he might not be able to get it closed, and then we would really be in trouble.

Salix, do you have any idea what these things are?

OOC: Karl, I know you are waiting for a knowledge check from Mark, so I am just RP'ing here.

From: Karl

Subject Going in

OOC: He already responded that none of us know.

IC: I have no idea. They sound too big for wolves, but too small for dire wolves. The sulphur smell bothers me. In nature that's usually associated with places of fire from within the earth. Who knows what hellish creatures these may be?

From: Kevin

Subject Going in

OOC: Sorry, did not realize that. Let me work something up.

From: Kevin

Subject The plan

IC: I agree. It reminded me of a tindertwig lighting up, and that's not a smell I like. But, they were not very large - maybe the challenge is the sheer number of them. If we can take them on one or two at a time, I think we will be OK.

OK, I want to use the hallway bottleneck. I want to draw a few of them out of the room and into the hallway, where we can use our swords and bows and the magic types can use what spells they have left. Here is the plan.

Ranthir and Mund will line up just down the hall from the door (i.e. A6-B6). I will open the door and get the creatures attention (because I only carry this crossbow for decoration). I will run back to behind Ran and Mund (B7), with Ragnar waiting next to me (A7). Kal, I want you and Salix behind us and Allistair and Surin behind you. When I come running, Ran and Mund shoot whatever makes it through that door. Once they make it down the hallway, we start hacking away as possible, only allowing 2 of them up front at a time. If we get pushed back to the main room, then those of you behind the front lines get ready to surround them on either side as they come through.

All right?

OOC: Remember, we do not have a huge number of arrows or bolts left (and Harp is pretty useless with his anyway). Ran has a good A/C, good HP and gets 2 attacks a round now. Mund does great damage. Harp and Ragnar will be the backup - they both have good A/C and decent HP.

Lets get it on.

From: Randy

Subject the plan

"Sounds good." Ranthir sheathes his sword and pulls out his crossbow, already loaded.

From: Porter

Subject The plan

OOC: Even though Mund really wants to do this, I'm afraid that we're biting off more than we can chew.

IC: Mund's ready to go.

From: Josh

Subject The plan

OOC: I agree with Porter.

IC: Kal's ready.

From: Mark

Subject The plan

Tasty, chewy adventurer. Food of the gods. Adventurer jerky. :)

From: Jason

Subject The plan

I like the plan. We might also have someone ready at the door to the main room, so if we all run away from these vicious rabbits they can close it behind us.

From: Porter

Subject The plan

OOC: Wait! Before we go on, how do the doors from the main room into the hallway open? Do then open inward or outward? Could we do there what Mund suggested with slamming the door closed?

From: Mark

Subject Doors

So far all of the doors have opened in.

I think.

This is one of those areas where things go the way the DM wants them. :) The group moves at the speed of plot and doors open the way I need them to to make the rooms work. :)

From: Mark

Subject Spells

Are Allistair and Kal going to cast spells? If so which ones?

From: Josh

Subject Spells

Kal's casting Bull's strength on Ran before combat starts, and will let loose w/ a Magic Missle whenever he sees a baddie.

From: Josh

Subject Spells

OOC: It seems like Ran's on the front line. I'm casting it on him if he's on the front line. Otherwise Harp.

From: Derek

Subject Spells

Is it possible for Allistair to cast a web across the door so that these "wolves" might get stuck going through the door without entangling any of his comrades? If possible, he will do so. If not, he still has 6 MM's and he'll use one of those.

From: Porter

Subject Spells

How about casting it across the hallway as soon as the runner (Harp?) is past?

From: Kevin

Subject Doors

I think Surin would be the right person for this. Mark, assumign Ashley has no objection, would you include that.

From: Kevin

Subject The plan

OOC: Boy, 1 simple e-mail causes all this commotion.

Between Harp, Ran, Mund and Ragnar, we have almost 200 HP, most have 20+ A/C, and we do some good damage. If we can keep these things to only 2-4 attacking us at a time, we should be OK. If we were surrounded with 8 of them attacking, that would be an issue, but this is a good plan with what these guys have left.

Ran has been relatively uninvolved the past few encounters, so I thought it would be fun to put our 1 true 6th level fighter up front with our barbarian friend. Harp and Ragnar both have pretty good A/C, and Harp cond do some good damage.

Allistair can web the area where they are to come out if he wants. None of the others are going to complain about slowing these things down, least of all Harp who is running away from them.

From: Ashley

Subject The plan

For waiting at the entry to the main door? Sure, I'm for it -- is there a good way to communicate the fact that you're all going to run away like a bunch of pansies or should I just watch out for it? :P

From: Porter

Subject The plan

Mund suggests that Surin stick around to chuck an axe or two before manning the door.

From: Mark

Subject spells

It would be possible to web across the door, but it would be thin. Casting it to cover the ground would be more effetive. Please give me the coordinates of the squares you want to cover.

What, no fireball?

From: Mark

Subject The plan

Ok from what I understand this is the plan.

Harp will open the door, get their attention and high tail it back to the party, ending up at A8. Ran and Mund will be in the front row. Ran with sword and shield, Mund with axe and shield. Harp and Ragnar will be in the second row, both with sword and shield.

The party is hoping the there will be some distance between Harp and the creatures. If so Allistair is going to web the area shown on the map in yellow. He will do this as soon as Harp is at A7/B7. Kal is going to cast Bull's STR on Ran as Harp makes his move. Surin will see if he can get a throw in with his axes and then retreat to the door at A17/18, preparing to close it behind the party if they retreat back to the main room. Salix is waiting to see what the things are. Ragnar and Harp are backing up Mund and Ranthir.

Let me know if I am missing anything and I will write up the turn tomorrow night.

More planning, Harp does his thing, round 1 actions

From: Kevin

Subject More planning

OOC: Mark, initially, Mund and Ran will use their ranged weapons as the dog/wolf creatures come out of the room and (hopefully) get stuck in the web.

Guys, remember, you get can draw your weapons as a free action so long as it is part of a move action. We may want to rethink using the ranged weapons. Randy and Porter, you decide. Ragnar and Harp can leave 5 ft of space behind you to give you room to move if needed.

From: Kevin

Subject More planning

OOC: Randy and Porter, I apologize for speaking for you and your characters. Respond to Mark as you see fit.

I am just so used to having to tell Mark what to do, it is a hard habit to break.

From: Porter

Subject More planning

Is Allistair going to be casting web? If so, then Mund will definitely have his bow out. Otherwise, maybe it's not worth it.

From: Derek

Subject More planning

Allistair decides to hold out on casting a spell. If the hallway in front of them gets crowded with these beasts, then he'll consider a fireball or a web spell, but until he knows better what they're up against he'll wait.

From: Porter

Subject More planning

So that he doesn't risk trampling over his bow when he drops it, Mund will pull out his huntin' knife and will chuck it at one of the doggies as soon as it's in range.

From: Karl

Subject More planning

Salix will cast Call Lightening as soon as a doggie is in range and blast it.

From: Porter

Subject More planning

Cute widdle doggiie!

From: Randy

Subject More planning

OOC: Maybe Mund can tame one to keep as a pet.

Ranthir will use sword and shield since he is being assisted by the Bull's Strength spell and gets two attacks per round. He won't charge them unless Mund does so first. "Better to let them come to us" he says to Mund.

From:Mark

Subject Harp does his thing

The plan is quickly hatched and everyone takes their places. Mund and Ran in the first row, 40 or so feet back from the door, Ragnar behind them with Kal, Salix Allistair and Surin backing them up. A spot is left for Harp behind Mund. Harp takes his place by the door, listening as he best he can, trying to decide when the best time to open the door is. After a few minutes he signals to the others that he is ready. Kal moves forward and chants the spell of strength and touches Ranthir. The 1/2 elf feels power flow through him, his muscles aching to do something.

With a grunt Harp throws open the door and shouts "Come on you ugly dogs, catch me if you can!" He then turns and with much clanking, runs back to his place, glancing behind him as he goes. Mund and Ran make a gap for the 1/2 orc to get through and Harp hustles into his spot. At just that moment several of the things burst from the door, look down the hallway and howl.

Round 1 initiative

Ranthir (18), Mund (17), Salix (15), Allistair (14), W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

OODM: I have attached the current map. I need round 1 actions.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 1 actions

OOC: Mark, I have told you numerours times - you need to use a d20 for my initiative, not a d10.

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

Is each square 5 feet? If so, then Mund could close the gap in one turn and attack, and the doggies almost surely can.

From: Mark

Subject Round 1 actions

Yes each square is 5'.

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

Mund sheaths his dagger, draws his axe and waits for the doggies to come to him. As soon as one is close enough, he'll attack it without moving.

From: Josh

Subject Round 1 actions

Kal will fire a MM at the front most doggie, and yells for Allistar to target the same one.

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

If Mund can see one get damaged by magic, Mund will target the same one.

More round 1 actions, real life and gods

From: Karl

Subject Round 1 actions

Salix will call lightening on W4.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 1 actions

Harp will stand and watch everyone else do their thing, hoping that the plans comes off as hoped. He is a bit concerned about everyone being so close together - the spell casters don't have to be "right" behind the fighters. Harp will say back over his shoulder to Kal "Kal, try to get Salix and Allistair to step back a bit - I want some room up here if Ragnar adn I have to change places with Ran and Mund."

From: Karl

Subject Round 1 actions

Is it too late to have Salix back up as far as possible after casting CL? I actually meant to include that, but forgot.

From: Mark

Subject Round 1 actions

No it is not too late. It might even be tomorrow before I get the turn done. We are doing year end inventory today, I have an auction I have to participate in and I am hosting my RL DnD game tonight.

From: Porter

Subject Real life

RL!?!!!! What kind of sick priorities do you have?

From: Mark

Subject Real life

Now you see I would also expect Kevin to make a comment like that, but he is one of the people in the RL game, so no bitching from him

From: Karl

Subject Real life

I submit that the portion of my life that it takes to participate in this game by email is every bit as real as the lives involved in the one you are having face to face tonight.

That said, I don't begrudge you the "RL" experience. Have fun. :-D

From: Porter

Subject Real life

Karl, I thought you had my back! Now is the time to begrudge

From: Mark

Subject Real life

True, true, but you guys, and gal, don't get my wife's fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.

From: Kevin

Subject Real life

But they don't mix real well with the sausage and pepperoni pizza and beer I have every week.

Of course, during Lent, that is soy sausage and pepperoni, right???? (Wink, wink, nod, nod, - know what I mean?).

From: Karl

Subject Real life

Ok, NOW I begrudge you the experience. :P

From: Porter

Subject Real life

A day late and a dollar short. <_<

From: Derek

Subject Round 1 actions

Allistair isn't sure whether Kal is referring to W4 or W8, so he targets W4 with a MM.

From: Mark

Subject Real life

I am trying to convince my wife bake some Thursday night next week so that we can have some fresh ones on Friday night Karl.

From: Randy

Subject Round 1 actions

Ranthir waits with Mund as well and will target the first creature to get near him.

From: Mark

Subject Round 1 actions

Ok here is how this works as far as I understand.

Mund and Ranthir are holding action until the beasties act. this has a couple of effects. It lowers your init score to theirs, but you will still act before them, basically becuase you are preparing for their move towards you. I want to know what MUnd and Ran will do if the things do not close?

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

Um. That's a good point.

It that too far away to chuck a knife?

From: Derek

Subject Round 1 actions

OOC: In other words, "These things will not close because they have a range attack, and you all are screwed. What will you do?" ;)

From: Kevin

Subject Round 1 actions

OOC:I think if they start getting hit by MM and lighting and a thrown weapon or two, some of them will come after us. Of course, if they have a 60' cone breath weapon, we are done for. No one know what they are or what they can do, so Harp is doing the best he can with what he knows. Lets hope that is enough.

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

If they have range weapons, then there's no reason to sit back and let them keep doing it.

Mund can make it the entire distance to the doggies in one turn and attack with his axe. Can Ranthir?

From: Ashley

Subject Round 1 actions

Um, is it still a good idea for Surin to try and get an axethrow in?

P.S. he is *so* getting a ranged weapon when we get outa here

From: Jason

Subject Round 1 actions

Damn this was a bad day to swap Protection from Elements for Cure Moderate Wounds. (Of course, if I hadn't, Mund might be dead right now.)

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

It's kinda funny that we all know what these things are, but none of our characters do.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 1 actions

OOC:If worse comes to worse, we charge the ones in the hallway. Taking on 4 of them does not worry me too much. 8 of them(and surrounded at the same time) that worries me. If they hang back, then we charge them.

From: Randy

Subject Round 1 actions

If they don't approach us, then I say we charge. I don't know if Ranthir can reach them and attack in the same turn but he can be a good meat shield.

From: Porter

Subject Round 1 actions

It's a plan then. If they don't come forward, Ranthir and Mund will.

From: Mark

subject: Round 1 actions

Mund can make it, I think, with a standard move action and still have a standard attack.

Ranthir would have to do a charge action, which allows a double move and a standard attack. He also would get bonuses to hit but take a -2 to AC, IIRC.

From: Kevin

Subject Round 1 actions

If Harp sees Mund and Ran move foward, he will move forward (2 move actions, since he has no one to charge.

He will say to Kal "Kal, stay here with the others in case these things break through." Turning to Ragnar, he says "For the glory of Heironious, lets take the battle to them".

If Mund and Ran do not move (the creatures come to us) he will not do the above.

From: Porter

Subject gods

Just so it's clear, Mund ain't doin' *nothin* for the glory of Heironious.

From: Porter

Subject gods

From: Kevin

Subject gods

Harp didn's ask Mund to do it, he asked his fellow cleric of Heironious.

Mund is soooo sensitive.

From: Jason

Subject Round 1 actions

Ragnar will cast spirit weapon and have it attack whichever one has been shot by magic missiles. He'll have it attack from behind (it doesn't help flank, but at least it will be out of the way.) If Harp moves up, Ragnar will move up with him. For the glory of Heironeous. (Does anyone else find it amusing that Harp is acting for the glory of some god that doesn't exist? I mean I realize the Knights of the Silver Sword are a military order, but you'd think they would at least get the name right :)

Subject Round 1

Round 1 initiative

Salix (15), Allistair (14), Ranthir (13), Mund (13),W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

Ranthir and Mund wait for the expected attack, sword and axe held ready. Salix turns to Surin and says "Little one, I think it is time we head back a little and leave the in close stuff to those better able to do it." The halfling nods and starts moving back. Salix backs up and as he does he chants the prayer of lightning. At the top of the ceiling, just below the ceiling a cloud forms and at the druid's command, a bolt of electricity streaks down from the cloud and strikes one of the lead creatures (Call lightning on W4). The stroke surprises the beast and it strikes it solidly on the back, leaving a smoking patch of skin (REF save, DC16, 6+5=11, fail, damage 7).

Allistair sees the things hesitate a bit. "Not good" he thinks to himself. "Let's see if we can goad them." The mage chants the basic spell and three missiles launch from his fingers and streak towards the dog thing that Salix had just fried. They strike with a solid force and almost knock the thing off its feet.

The spells have the desired effect. As one the beats leap forward, rushing to attack. Mund and Ran are waiting. As the two leading things rush the two fighters, Mund and Ran step forward to meet the assault

Mund swings his axe at the wounded beast attacking him (AC16, 1+9+10,miss). The thing ducks under the blow, just barely missing getting it's head separated from its shoulders.

Ran swings at the beast attacking him, side stepping the things attack and lashing out with his sword. Power flows through his veins and sinew and his sword connects (AC16, 7+12=19,hit, damage 7). He follows up with a cut to the things legs but it dodges out of the way (AC16, 6+7=13, miss).

The creature that Mund is fighting opens its mouth, as if to snarl at the barbarian, but Mund is stunned to see it breath fire at him. The cone of fire washes over him and fills the area behind him. Mund is barely able to throw himself to the side and is able to avoid most of the flames (REF save, DC13, 17+4=21, save , damage 4).

Ranthir's foe launches itself at his throat, trying to rip it out (AC21, 20+5=25, hit, critical threat, Critical threat roll, AC21, 5+5=10,miss, damage 10). The thing sinks its teeth into the chain around Ran's throat and bites down. Ran feels flesh tear and feels a burning sensation coming from where the teeth are. He punches the thing in the head and it lets him go.

The other two beasts in the hallway move up and almost as one and breath fire as well. The fiery breath surrounds the two beasts in front of them and then engulfs the two fighters. Ran's lightning reflexes save him (REF save, DC13, 6+7=13, save, damage 1). Mund easily dodges the worst of the fire, only getting singed (REF save, DC13, 19+4=23, save, damage 5).

Ragnar sees that he might be able to help. He chants the spell of the sword and a glowing sword shows up behind the beast fighting Mund. The glowing shape swings at the beast but misses by a wide margin (AC16, 2+6=8,miss). Ragnar steps up behind Ran. "I am here Ran if you need help" the dwarf shouts.

Kal is mesmerized by creatures that can breath flame. "I though only dragons could do that." Shaking off the shock he chants the missile spell and three bolts of force leap from his rapier, striking the dog like creature in front of Mund (Damage 9). The three bolts strike the thing in the face and its head explodes in a shower of blood and bone.

Harp moves forward, hoping to support Mund if he gets into trouble.

From: Mark

Subject Round 2

Salix (15), Allistair (14), Ranthir (13), Mund (13),W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

Salix motions with his hand again and another bolt of lightning streaks from the ceiling and strikes the lead beast (W8) in the back (REF save DC16, 6+5=11, fail, damage 7). The smell of ozone and burning fur starts to fill the hallway.

Allistair is glad to see that these things are not immune to his magic. The fire breath was a bit of surprise. He had been thinking about using his fireball spell, but it was likely that these things would have some resistance to fire. He would have to see about getting some of the other elemental spells. Salix seemed to be having good luck with the lightning, so another one of the missile spells would have to do. A quick chant and another three missiles strike Ranthir's foe (W8) (Damage 11).

Ranthir sees that his foe (W8) is almost dead. With a quick stabbing motion, he drives his sword through the things chest (AC16, 15+12=27, hit, damage 8). Ran kicks the dead body off of his sword and steps forward to engage the next foe (W2). His swing goes wide (AC16, 5+7=12, miss) as the thing ducks under the blade.

Mund also steps forward, his axe whistling as it slashes at the beast in front of him (W1) (AC16, 19+9=28, hit, damage 5). His axe crashes into the things back but it is able to twist away at the last second, leaving only a small bloody wound.

Almost as one the two beasts (W7, W6) in the second row breathe on the two fighters. Mund and Ranthir are surrounded in flames. Ranthir is able to dodge most of the blast from the first one but throws himself right in the path of the other (REF save, DC13, 16+7=23, save, 2+7=9, fail, damage 13). Mund tries to jump out of the way of the fire but runs into Ranthir as he tries to avoid the flame. The barbarian is caught in the middle of both burst (REF save, DC13, 1+4=5, fail, 7+4=11, fail, damage 13).

Ran's foe takes advantage of Ran's distraction and leaps for the 1/2 elves arm (AC21, 13+5=18, miss) However, Ran is able block the thing with his shield.

Mund's foe also takes advantage of the barbarian's distraction and leaps at his throat (AC21, 13+5=18, miss). Mund's instinctive reflexes save him as he is able to dodge out of the way.

Ragnar concentrates on his spiritual weapon, mentally guiding it to attack another foe, this time the one attacking Ranthir (W2) (AC16, 6+7+13, miss). Ragnar then starts chanting the prayer that will protect the group from evil.

Kal winces when he sees Mund and Ranthir surrounded by fire. Doing what he can to help he chants the missile spell again and another three bolts of power fly from his rapier tip and strike Mund's foe (W1) in the head (Damage 8).

Harp's shock at the fire breath is tinged with thanks that they had not all piled into the room at the same time. What if all 8 of these things had been breathing on them? They might all be dead by now. Harp watches as Mund is blasted by two more cones of fire. Well there was something he could do about that. Holding his holy symbol and chanting the prayer of resistance. He then step forward and touches Mund on the back, the power of the battle lord flowing into the barbarian.

Subject Round 3

Round 3 initiative

Salix (15), Allistair (14), Ranthir (13), Mund (13),W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

Salix grins at the damage he is causing. He is finding a liking to the powers of nature, electricity in particular. It had served him well so far, even inside the constructed monstrosity of a place. Pointing at the dog like creature fighting Mund (W1), the druid calls down another bolt and strikes the thing on the head. The thing is able to dodge most of the blast (REF save, DC16, 14+5=19, save, damage 8) but the concussion of the blast throws it against the wall, shattering its spine.

Allistair was prepared to shoot some more missiles at the dog thing in front of Mund but changes target when the lightning bolt kills the thing. Pointing his finger at the one fighting Ranthir (W2), he chants the simple spell again and once more the three bolts of force slam into the things body (Damage 11).

Ran regains his balance and strikes at the thing in front of him (W2), using the distraction from the magic missiles, he makes quick cut at the things head and lays the skull open. (AC16, 7+12=19,hit, damage 8). Taking a step forward he lunges at the next beast (W6) and plunges his sword into its belly up to the hilt (17+7=24, hit, damage 11). The thing pulls itself off the blade, growling at the 1/2 elf as it does.

Mund follows Ran's lead and moves forward to attack the next beast in line (W7). He feints with his axe and changes his line at the last second. However the thing guess Mund's intent and almost dodges out of the way (AC16, 7+9=16, hit, damage 4)

The two beasts from the back row (W5, W3) follow up with their own blasts of flames. This time though both fighters are ready for it. Mund dodges left and Ran goes right and both avoid the worst of the flames (Mund, REF Save, DC13, 20+4=24, save, 12+4=16, save, damage 6, Ran, 17+7=24, save, 10+7=17, save, damage 5).

Mund's foe bites at the barbarian but comes no where close to hurting him (AC21, 4+5=9,miss). Ran's opponent also bites at the 1/2 elf but he is able to catch the jaws on his shield (AC21, 11+5=16,miss).

Ragnar concentrates on his magic sword and it moves to attack one of the beasts in the back row (W3). However the thing sees the blade coming and dodges out of the way (AC16, 7+7=14, miss).

Kal realizes that he does not have the mental strength to cast another spell. He waits to see if he is needed. Surin waits by the door, optimistic that the tide of battle is turning.

Harp lets Mund know that he is there if the barbarian is too injured. Mund's reply causes Harp to blush.

OODM: End round 3. I need round 4 actions.

Round 4 initiative

Salix (15), Hippogriff (15), Allistair (14), Ranthir (13), Mund (13),W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

"These things are falling quickly but that fire breath has to be hurting those two" Salix thinks to himself. "Maybe if they had another target." With that Salix makes up his mind. Moving closer he touches the oak leaves embossed on the chest of his armor and chants the prayer of summoning. He finishes the prayer just as he gets behind Ragnar. Pointing to the open space behind the creatures, a Hippogriff appears. With a loud screech Salix commands it and the creature attacks the dog things. It claws at the closest enemy (W5) (AC16, 15+6=21, hit, damage 6).

Allistair continues his magic missile assault with three more bolts striking the beast in front of Mund (W7) (Damage 7).

Ranthir recovers from his dodging of the flame just a few seconds ago and launches another attack on the beast in front of him (AC16, 11+12=23, hit, damage 6, 3+7=10, miss). The first slash cuts the thing across the chest but the second attack misses by a wide margin.

Mund uses his axe haft to block a bite from the beast his is fighting. He then reverses his grip and slashes down on the beast (AC 16, 13+9=22, hit, damage 8). His blade caves in the things skull. Mund steps forward, ready to attack one of the remaining foes.

Ran's foe makes a febbel attempt at Ran's leg, but the creature is obviously on it's last legs (AC21, 8+5=13, miss). Ranthir side steps the bite with ease.

The last two hounds turn and attack the hippogriff, which is blocking their escape. The both bite at it (AC15, 5+5=10,miss, 5+5=10,miss) but the buffeting of the hippogriff's wings knocks them back.

Ragnar sees that the fighters in the front row seem to be making quick work of the things they are facing, but that those two are also being hurt by the flames from the second row. He concentrates on his spiritual weapon and guides it to attack one of the things in the back row (AC16, 13+7=20, hit, damage 6). The glowing sword cuts into the things flesh, leaving a good sized wound. Ragnar then moves the few feet between him and Ran, ready to heal the fighter if he takes any more damage.

Kal moves back to where Surin is watching the door. Harp moves up behind Mund, his sword hand itching on the hilt of his sword. That should be me in there he thinks to himself.

OODM: I need round 5 actions. Map shows current positions, the yellow thing is the hippogriff.

From: Porter

Subject Round 5 actions

Mund didn't take any damage this round, so he still doesn't feel a need to withdraw. He attacks the dog right in front of him (W5), leaving the one next to him (W3) for Harp. Maybe there's hope for that boy yet, and he really has the heart of an Orc somewhere in that annoyinger-than-thou chest of his. Mund knows that he'd be frustrated too if he didn't get to draw blood in this battle.

Round 5 actions, round 5 and after the fight

From: Karl

Seeing that the remaining forward facing dog (W6) is nearly done for and seeing that it is well covered by the others, Salix calls forth another bolt of lightening at the dog that the hippogriff attacked (W5).

From: Kevin

Subject Round 5 actions

Harp watches as the beasts start to fall quicker now. They were down to three, and thanks to Salix, they had an extra ally at the enemies rear. That would help keep them from running away at least. Just a few more seconds and they should be able to kill the rest of them. Harp keeps close to Mund, ready to step in if needed.

From: Randy

Subject Round 5 actions

Since Ranthir was not injured this round, he continues to focus on the hound in front of him. Now that the two other beasts were occupied by the Hippogriff he has less to worry about in terms of their fiery breath. It's too bad Salix hadn't thought of that sooner but his lightening had been very helpful too so maybe it was for the best.

OOC: Does Ranthir get a flanking bonus against W6 or would that only happen if Mund was attacking W6 as well?

From: Mark

Ran does not get a flanking bonus. The two people doing the flanking have to be on opposite sides of the enemy.

Round 5 initiative

Salix (15), Hippogriff (15), Allistair (14), Ranthir (13), Mund (13),W1-8 (13), Ragnar (11), Kal (7), Surin (6), Harp (6).

Confident that his animal ally will do as commanded, Salix points at one of the beasts in the back row (W5) and a bolt of lightning streaks from the ceiling again striking the thing in the back (REF save DC16, 5+5=10, fail, damage 8). The hippogriff strikes as the beast recovers it's balance (AC16, 6+6=12, miss, 13+6=19, hit, damage 7). One claw rakes across its back but the other misses as does the bite.

Allistair decides to hold off using any more magic. The quarters were getting a little tight and his brother and Ranthir seemed to have everything well in hand.

Ran's first swing against his foe (W6) almost goes wide (AC16, 5+12=17, hit, damage 8), but he is able to correct his aim at the last second and removes the things head from its shoulders. Taking a quick step forward he follows up with a lunge that takes the next beast (W3) right in the chest (AC16, 11+9=20, hit, damage 8).

Mund whoops when he sees that only two of the things are left and that both of them are hurt. He swings his axe at the legs of the one in front of him(W5) (AC16, 10+11=21, hit, damage 6) and chops the legs from beneath it. The remaining hound creature turns and tries to run by the hippogriff, but Ranthir and Mund both chop it down before it can get past.

As Salix thanks the hippogriff and dismisses it, Mund speaks out loud "Those were some good hot doggies."

OODM: Fight over, let me know your actions now.

After the fight, healing and Room J

From: Karl

Subject After the fight

Salix blushes at the suggestion, but nods agreement. "I apologize to all of you who were burned unnecessarily. I should have asked for my God's grace to provide the additional help earlier to distract the ones in back. I didn't know they would be able to attack with fire like that without hurting their own kind as well. Even so, I had to sacrifice a portion of my Lord's grace I had thought to use for other purposes. Not that I begrudge the use of it, mind you. It just not always easy to foresee when my limited powers are most useful." He stops, feeling like he should say more, but feeling like even what he said was a feeble excuse for a failure of judgment. He blushes further and, not looking at anyone in the group, heads toward the doorway to scan the room the dog-creatures came from.

OOC- he will not enter the room until Harp commands and/or it has been checked for traps. He's embarrassed and will be unusually quiet for a while.

From: Kevin

Subject After the fight

Harp breathes a sigh of relief. There had been a bad spot there at the beginning, but they had been able to turnt he tide and defeat the creatures with "acceptable" damage to the group. Granted, Ran and Mund looked pretty singed, but nothing a good days sleep and some healing grace would not be able to take care of. Harp calls the group together.

"Good job, all. Compared to some of the other rooms, that was not so bad, but that might not be all we meet before we get the key. Mund and Ran, I know your hurt, but I want to check this room. Ragnar and I will lead this time, with you two as back up. I want to check the room to make sure there is nothing else hiding in there waiting for us, then we can search. The party takes stock of its situation. No one dead, only two seriously wounded. "Mund and Ranthir" Harp says " I want to take a look in the room those things came from but I want you two as back up. Ragnar and I will take the lead now with you two in support. You two can back us up and Salix and Kal will be the last line. Ok folks, lets go see what we can find." Harp and Ragnar move to the front of the party and lead them into the room.

The room is odd shaped, sort of like a T. The party moves about 10 feet into the room. They can see a door on one wall. Harp signals to Surin, motioning him foward. The halflind nods. This is what he was best at. Surin moves forward with a little less caution than usual. "Those dog creatures had been moving all over the room before they came out after us and they were way bigger then me, so there probably ain't no pressure plates on the floor or trip wires.

He moves up to the long part of the T and looks east down the long section. He sees two doors, one on the north wall and the one on the south wall that the rest of the party can see. Surin moves back and reports to Harp what he sees.

OODM: Continue?

From: Derek

Subject Room J

Allistair is getting a little tired of the open-the-door-and-kill-things routine. "How about I just make Surin invisible, he opens both of the doors, comes back here to the hall where we close the door and let whatever is in those two rooms kill each other? We can come back in a couple of hours later to clean up whatever is left." Allistair's tone is somewhat sarcastic, but it is a real suggestion.
